Description

2025 Smokey Vinyl

A Detroit house/jazz masterpiece, 2004, mercifully back in circulation on vinyl for as long as stocks last (ie, not long) – don’t think twice if you spent the last 20 years kicking yourself for missing out – really is the GOAT.

‘Black Mahogani’ first landed some 10 years into Kenny Dixon Jr.’s catalogue and firmly pinned him on the map with its hugely ambitious scope and attention to detail. His 5th and arguably most celebrated studio album, it’s also by far his most coveted, partly due to being neglected from reissue schemes, which has led to a status that’s grown in step with KDJ’s renown.

It still fully kills with ten top shelf cuts sifted from prized 12”s dating back to the late ‘90s and here stitched with exclusive gear into a sort of deep jazz soundtrack updated with a Detroit house heartbeat and leagues-deep soul, effortlessly bridging epochs with timeless steez.

To pluck a few jewels from its crown, centrepiece ’Shades of Jae’ is a masterclass in deferred kick drum gratification that never fails in the dance, and the lush, jazz-taught sashay of ‘Runaway’ and sampledelia of ‘Mahogani 9000’ still take our breath away. But it’s really all best taken in longform context, from the first frisson of hi-hats and Roberta Sweed’s aching croon on ‘Holiday’ thru the filter chicanery of a closing title tune that only sets one up to do it over and again…
