Description
Skee Mask makes good on the promise of his debut 12”s with a full LP of emotionally wrought ambient techno and aqueous breakbeats in Shred, his debut album and Ilian Tapes’ 2nd since Zenker Brothers’ Immersion in 2015.
Landing ahead of his recently announced side for Opal Tapes, Shred exhibits a restless and sophisticated dancefloor spirit in 12 filigree constructions, diving from the lofty ambience of Everest into a new age digital bubblebath with HAL Conv., before sweeping into aerial tribal drum ritual with Autotuned and exploring dark room deep techno in Backcountry.
At its apex, Melzcop brings the rave with rude ‘ardcore flex eazed off by lush pads, and Zenker Haze Trak reflects on harmonic Detroit vibes. The fluttering arpeggios and mercurial rhythms of Japan Air perhaps make for the album’s most enduring moment, whilst Panorama signals a sticky but crisply spacious and modular-sounding approach that we’d like to hear him pursue further.
Smart.
